Presented for the first time in 2010 at the Cervantes Institute in New York, Secrets on Black is a photographic series that intensely reflects Spanish culture. Through a visual style marked by chiaroscuro, restrained scenography and an atmosphere of dramatic tension, Antonio Banderas enters a terrain where classical Spanish painting, cinema, opera and literature converge.
The images not only stand out for their formal beauty, but also for their conceptual strength. Mythological references such as Don Juan Tenorio, Carmen or Goya’s Maja Desnuda come to life in carefully constructed scenes, where light and shadow not only model bodies, but also emotions. The female body -frequent in his work- becomes a powerful symbol, a visual story that interpellates from both aesthetics and emotion.
This artistic photography proposal articulates an intimate and complex look at the Spanish collective imaginary, reinterpreting it from a contemporary sensibility, with an approach that combines sensuality, elegance and dramatic tension.
Secrets on blackartistic photography and symbolic narrative
Antonio Banderas explained that the inspiration for this aesthetic goes back to his beginnings in the theater in Malaga in the 70s, a time marked by precariousness, in which the actor was alone on stage, cut out against a black background. That minimalist and powerful image has accompanied him ever since and has been key in the visual conception of this photographic series. “This situation of the actor alone against that black background makes a lot of sense to me and I have tried to bring it to this exhibition by playing with the models,” he said in an interview on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition.
This visual conception reinforces the symbolic character of the images, endowing them with an atmosphere of dramatic, almost cinematographic silence. As he himself has stated: “I have not sought spontaneity but theatricality”. This intention of constructing scenes charged with meaning turns his work into an extension of his artistic sensibility, revealing a more intimate and reflective dimension of his creative universe.

Although Secretos sobre negro marked his debut as a photographer, it was not an isolated event.
